Always Aim Higher
Having an aim or ambition is one good quality
anyone could and should possess. It simply implies that you have a set
goal(s) or objective(s) which you want to achieve in a particular way,
at a particular pace possibly and at a set time. Being ambitious also
involves having a set mission (short term goals) and vision (long term
goals) and probably mapping them down.
Our main concern here however,
is on how not to just aim, but to always aim higher. But then, you must
first discover or know what you want. Then aim for it. Pay little or no
attention to side attractions. Aiming higher therefore presupposes
thinking and dreaming big; having this big picture . . . this huge
mission and vision beyond what you could have otherwise been ordinarily
able to achieve without much fuss.
Why aim higher? Firstly, it gives
you that extra hunger and drive which in turn propels you to break
monopolies, barriers and limitations. It can also push you to breaking
existing records thereby setting new ones. An extra drive can make all
the difference between a simple success and a very huge success.
Secondly, aiming higher is harmless. Thirdly, when the chips are down
having aimed higher and things don’t work out exactly as planned, there
is still a good chance that the result might still be good. I mean, you
may still achieve a considerable amount of (remarkable) success in place
of the extremely remarkable success you earlier anticipated. Much like
when a student works hard for straight “As” in an ideal educational
system. There is a very high likelihood that if he doesn’t make those
“As”, the least he might make could be “Bs” or a mixture of both. Reason
being that he had already set his mind on the higher picture and
vigorously pursued it. And with all the time, efforts prayers and faith
he had put in, it so hard imagining him getting anything beyond “Bs". So
. . . well, he isn’t able to hit his set target. But then, he still
hasn’t failed either; and yes, he still has got some good results too.
Got my gist now? Yeah!
There is a caveat though. . .
Aiming
higher requires a surge of higher drives, hunger and zeal. Therefore,
if not well tamed could turn to be a hydra-headed monster sapping even
the most morally pious or spiritually upright person of his virtues. The
adsverse effect could therefore lead to moral decadence or spiritual
bankruptcy. Thus, if care is not taken, it could turn out to be the
cause of greed, corruption, occultism, robbery, immorality and some
other vices and evils as seen in our society today. Being ambitious
should not push you to being overambitious.
Importantly also, you
should be wary of way-out-of-this-world or unrealistic targets when
having a higher aim. Your vision must be very clear to you (even if
others do not see any prospect in it). There is no crime in having very
difficult or seemingly impossible goals or targets so long they are
realistic. That way, won’t end up building your castle in the air. You
also overcome the error of conceiving mere fantasies instead of dreams;
or the near impossible task of searching for shadows to chase even in
the dark. I bet your time, energy and resources are too precious to be
wasted on a wild goose chase. Your plans should therefore be well
mathematized and mapped out.
You can generally overcome the
temptations that come along with having higher aims by keeping good
companies of like minds; reading good books which essentially includes
the bible; and of course, the place of prayers can never be
overemphasized!
So friends, I figure its time enough you took a go at
it. Always aim higher. Stay positive and stay focused. We never can
tell, you can turn out to be the next Dangote or even Bill Gate. These
are no aliens, but human beings with humble beginnings like most of us.
Isn’t it? Remember, the best is yet to be born just as the beautiful
ones are not yet born.
Clearly, the earnest expectation of creation eagerly awaits your manifestation (Romans 8: 19).
Shalom!
